BMW Lightweight Chrome-Molly Flywheel
This is a heavy Duty version of our popular m4x m5x S5x series flywheel but this takes the the big strong 240mm M30 series clutch!
Made from High tensile Chrome-molly steel these flywheels are both light and very strong. Guaranteed for life!
Weighing only about 3.8Kg (8.5Lb) they will greatly increase the response and acceleration of any vehicle. Clutch weight is still a significant addition so there is no possibility of being "too light"
Clutch fitment is standard 240mm from BMW M30/S38 Engines These clutches are very strong and over built with fully sprung centers. They are ideal for use with single mass FW giving a really nice smooth OEM feel while still being capable of transmitting an extremely large torque capacity!
There are 3 different grades of OEM clutch kits commonly available for this Flywheel.
All these clutches have a standard 10 spline center but the plate can be swapped with other 240mm clutches if a different spline is required
p/n 21219069010 This is the early model M30 clutch, usually the most common and lowest cost, great for everyday use, still incredibly strong and reliable.
p/n 21219069012 This is the later model M30 clutch for bigger and heavier cars, it has a stronger center and plate springs, great for track use and forced induction etc.
p/n 21212226428 This is the big S38 M5 clutch with huge torque capacity and indestructible construction, ideal for extreme turbo and race applications 600Hp+
It is a common perception that a large flywheel is used to increase the torque of and engine and with a light flywheel an engine will have less torque but this is NOT the case.
Heavy flywheels are used only to ease the smooth engagement of the clutch so Grandma can take off without stalling the engine and that's it! maybe improve idle quality a little also.
Once the car is rolling and the clutch is fully engaged the flywheel becomes completely unnecessary because the entire vehicle and its drive line becomes the flywheel storing huge amounts of momentum. Any additional weight particularly on the crank shaft because this spins at higher speeds only reduces the vehicles capability to accelerate briskly.
So if Grandma isn't going to drive your car and you don't mind having to use a little more finesse with the clutch pedal to take off from the lights then you will enjoy all the benefits of having a snappy responsive engine with much improved acceleration that comes with installing a light flywheel, even if its only a daily driven road car!
